John Mayer first visited NCIRE and the San Francisco VA Medical Center in 2009 for a briefing with leading researchers and physicians on all aspects of post-traumatic stress and neurotrauma - causes, consequences, and current treatments - and to meet with Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. He returned to San Francisco later that year to attend "Welcome Home 2009," an outreach and education event for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans, to thank Veterans for their service and to learn first-hand about the challenges of readjusting to life after combat.

During 2010, on the Battle Studies Winter Tour, John made time to meet informally with Veterans, often minutes before going on stage to perform. He spoke with them about their struggles with traumatic brain injury - the signature wound of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan - and post-traumatic stress, which affects approximately one out of five troops who have seen combat.
